Fall back....but not into old habits!

As we prepare to hunker down for the winter it is important to keep some good habits we have made and try not to fall into old ones that seem so comfortable.

This fall is the perfect time to set up some new habits.  Habits are something that become second nature to us.  Take an overview of your life and look at the areas that you struggle the most in.  Is it eating a good breakfast, exercising everyday, getting enough sleep, spending quality time with your family, or taking time to relax and unwind.  We all struggle and our struggles change or increase as quickly as the seasons.  If you try to take on too much at one time you will most likely fail.  Pick one thing, just one, and try to come up with a way to conquer it.

Let's say for example, you don't feel like you have enough quality time with your family, especially your children.   You may feel like the only conversations you have with them are ones that tell them to do things....."Do your homework, pick up your shoes, brush your teeth, be nice to your sister, quit playing video games".  All of these things only leave us as parents who instruct but are not engaged.  All this can change with a little change in our attitudes, language and maybe some time management.   Try to change your mindset a little and look at the time that we have as parents as short and foundational for them.  The things they learn from us will help form them into who they become and how they treat other people.  Through my many years of trial and error (mainly error) my mantra has become......Overlook what you can, deal with what you have to, and pour love into every decision you make so that you look back with no regrets. We struggle in our house everyday with something or another but trying to keep things in the right perspective helps us get through.

Family Day!

Family Day -- Be Involved, Stay Involved is September 23, 2013!
CASAColumbia® Family Day was launched in 2001 by CASAColumbia. Family Day is a national movement to celebrate parental engagement as an effective tool to help keep America’s kids substance free.

Parents, YOU make the difference!

As children age, it is important to build trust with them and keep the lines of communication open so that if at any point they begin to feel increased pressure to experiment with smoking, drinking and using drugs they can feel comfortable talking to you about it.

Every day activities like having family dinner together, helping your children with their homework or attending their after school activities have a lasting effect on your kids.

Each of these moments offers an opportunity to connect, share and really listen to what’s on their mind. Research shows that children with hands-on parents are far less likely to smoke, drink or use other drugs. Remember, parental engagement matters! http://casafamilyday.org/familyday/

This last Friday our school held our annual Carnival! It was an opportunity to spend some quality time together as a family.  Here are a few pics of the fun evening!

We don't have to wait for a school carnival or other special event to commit to leading our children.  Each of us can commit to being a STAR by doing some of these simple things.....

I commit to:
S- Spend time with my kids
T- Talk to them about their friends, interests and the dangers of drugs and alcohol
A- Answer their questions and listen to what they say
R- Recognize that I have the power to help keep my kids substance free!

As we move closer to our school's Red Ribbon Week (Oct. 7th- 11th) and really emphasis the importance of being drug and substance free, we can make it a daily commitment to help our children by engaging in these four steps to be a STAR.

New School Year.....New Healthy Schedules!

Preparing to go back to school in the next few weeks gives us new things to add to our schedules.  Oftentimes the stress and "busy-ness" involved are what lead us to unhealthy habits.  With a little planning we can make this a time to schedule health into our lives.  Our children, especially our little ones will follow whatever schedule we give them.   Here are a few tips for creating a healthy schedule.

#1  Make time to prepare a menu for the week along with a shopping list to go along with it.  We spend so much time waiting in the car that this could be the perfect time to write up a list.

#2  Make meals in bulk.  I have found that proteins such as chicken are cheaper when I buy a family pack.  Even though I may only need 2 chicken breasts for dinner, I will grill the entire family pack and then use the rest in meals throughout the week (ex. Grilled chicken breasts one night, chicken alfredo another night, and White Chicken Chili another night).  When you already have part of your meal prepared, it makes it easier to stick to your schedule.

#3  Stress plays a big part in living a healthy life and the most stressful times of the day are usually the hour before getting out the door in the morning and the hour after getting home at night.   Scheduling ahead makes for a less stressful situation.  A friend has her kids lay their clothes out and put their backpacks and lunches together the night before so there is no searching for the lost shoe in the morning!  At our house we love breakfast so we prepare pancake batter, smoothie ingredients or put together a breakfast casserole the night before so that final preparations are all that are needed in the morning.

#4  Get enough sleep.  Sometimes this is easier said than done, but sleep plays a huge part in a healthy lifestyle.  It decreases stress,  decreases weight gain and gives you enough energy to get through another day.  The best thing to do is have a bed time, for everyone!  A bedtime routine works great with kids, as well as adults.  Unplug yourself from life's distractions and read a book, think and ponder or write in a journal.  Find what you need to do to relax and enjoy a couple of minutes to unwind and prepare for sleep.

#5  Just get moving!   You do not need a personal trainer to tell you how to exercise and stay healthy, just move and hopefully involve your children along with you.  Take a walk as a family, park further away at the grocery store, take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk around during your lunch hour, play a game with your kids or better yet, teach them your favorite game.  Just move!

These are only five ideas and I'm sure you have more.  Please feel free to share what works with your family.   When you want to start a healthy schedule you may see resistance at first from yourself or your family but within a week or two everyone is used to the new schedule, so hang in there!  Your health is worth it!
