A Game to reduce your cravings

The struggle to reduce food cravings often seems in vain, but a simple and remarkably effective exercise can help to control food cravings and keep them in check. I have read that if you can distract yourself for as little as 5 or 10 minutes the craving for food will pass. Activities that reduce food cravings through exercises that divert your attention away from food are called distraction strategies. So I have an idea for a distraction strategy that will both reduce food cravings and help you focus on healthier thinking. You'll need to have a pen and paper handy at all times for this. I call this activity The Health Jumble.

Let's say you are watching TV and it's ice cream that's got your attention, and which you need to focus on to reduce food cravings. Write the word "ice cream" on a piece of paper and then see how many other words you can create with those letters. For example there's: rice, race, car, aim, ream, mice, are, mare, ram, cram, I, care, etc. You get the idea. You can make it easier by being even more specific like "mayflower vanilla ice cream." This will provide you with more letters and more possibilities. Then, after you've written as many words as possible, make a list of the healthy and positive words you made. Finally, see if you can create a "healthy sentence" or "positive statement" with some of these words.

The idea here is really threefold: 1) This activity allows you to face and confront your temptation; 2) It provides a way for you to engage that temptation in a safe, healthy and productive way; and 3) By creating the words and developing the sentence, you manipulate and change that temptation.

It is the month to learn about CRANBERRIES!!

Follow the link below and try this fun game to learn some interesting Fun Facts about apples.
    courtesy of Washington Apple Commission

    It's Apple Season!!!
    • Archeologists have found evidence that humans have been enjoying apples since at least 6500 B.C.
    • The apple tree originated in an area between the Caspian and the Black Sea.
    • Apple varieties range in size from a little larger than a cherry to as large as a grapefruit. There are apples that have an aftertaste of pears, citrus, cinnamon, cloves, coconut, strawberries, grapes and even pineapple!
    • Planting an apple seed from a particular apple will not produce a tree of that same variety. The seed is a cross of the tree the fruit was grown on and the variety that was the cross pollinator.
    • Apples have five seed pockets or carpels. Each pocket contains seeds. The number of seeds per carpel is determined by the vigor and health of the plant. Different varieties of apples will have different number of seeds.
    • It takes energy from 50 leaves to produce one apple.
    • Fresh apples float because 25% of their volume is air (thank goodness, or none of us would have ever experienced bobbing for apples!).
    • Apples ripen six to ten times faster at room temperature than if they were refrigerated. For optimal storage, apples should be kept at 35-40 degrees with relative humidity of 80-90%.

  • Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites.
  • Pumpkins are 90 percent water.
  • A pumpkin is really a squash?  It is! It's a member of the Cucurbita family which includes squash and cucumbers.
  • The largest pumpkin pie ever made was over five feet in diameter and weighed over 350 pounds. It used 80 pounds of cooked pumpkin, 36 pounds of sugar, 12 dozen eggs and took six hours to bake.
