Family Day!

Family Day -- Be Involved, Stay Involved is September 23, 2013!
CASAColumbia® Family Day was launched in 2001 by CASAColumbia. Family Day is a national movement to celebrate parental engagement as an effective tool to help keep America’s kids substance free.

Parents, YOU make the difference!

As children age, it is important to build trust with them and keep the lines of communication open so that if at any point they begin to feel increased pressure to experiment with smoking, drinking and using drugs they can feel comfortable talking to you about it.

Every day activities like having family dinner together, helping your children with their homework or attending their after school activities have a lasting effect on your kids.

Each of these moments offers an opportunity to connect, share and really listen to what’s on their mind. Research shows that children with hands-on parents are far less likely to smoke, drink or use other drugs. Remember, parental engagement matters! http://casafamilyday.org/familyday/

This last Friday our school held our annual Carnival! It was an opportunity to spend some quality time together as a family.  Here are a few pics of the fun evening!

We don't have to wait for a school carnival or other special event to commit to leading our children.  Each of us can commit to being a STAR by doing some of these simple things.....

I commit to:
S- Spend time with my kids
T- Talk to them about their friends, interests and the dangers of drugs and alcohol
A- Answer their questions and listen to what they say
R- Recognize that I have the power to help keep my kids substance free!

As we move closer to our school's Red Ribbon Week (Oct. 7th- 11th) and really emphasis the importance of being drug and substance free, we can make it a daily commitment to help our children by engaging in these four steps to be a STAR.
